As one of the earliest designs created for KINRADEN, the ring embodies the values that continue to define the brand today: connection, craftsmanship, and a profound respect for natural materials. Crafted in recycled 18 karat gold and set with a brilliant-cut Mpingo blackwood "diamond", the KINDRED Ring reinterprets the traditional signet ring through a distinctly contemporary lens.
Quiet in its expression yet rich in meaning, it reflects the connection between people, nature, and enduring design.
Inspiration
The KINDRED Ring takes its name from the idea that inspired the creation of KINRADEN. More than a family ring, it represents the connections between generations, people, and the natural world.
Part of the Kindred Collection, the design draws inspiration from the poetry of Emily Dickinson, translating themes of belonging and simplicity into a contemporary signet ring. In place of a traditional diamond sits a brilliant-cut Mpingo blackwood stone.
Building the Foundation
The process begins with two contrasting materials: recycled 18 karat gold and FSC-certified Mpingo blackwood. Each is prepared separately to ensure perfect stability before they are brought together.
The ring is first created as a solid gold foundation. Through precision casting and machining, its proportions are refined before the signature channels are carefully milled into the surface. These precisely engineered recesses form the framework that gives the ring its distinctive architectural expression.
Bringing Gold and Wood Together
The Mpingo inserts are carefully machined before being fitted into the gold structure. Because wood and gold behave differently over time, every component must be manufactured with exceptional precision to ensure a seamless, lasting union.
Rather than sitting as simple inlays, the wood and gold subtly overlap, creating delicate shadow lines that add rhythm and depth to the design. Once assembled, the ring begins to read as one continuous form.
Refinement Through Craftsmanship
The gold is polished to a luminous finish, while the Mpingo is sanded, burnished, and treated to reveal its naturally deep black tone. Each ring is then inspected by hand to ensure flawless craftsmanship, precise alignment, and seamless transitions between the two materials.
